Places to stay in Thailand

Thailand is where most of the places on this site are, and most of them are on islands. We cover the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao), the Andaman coast (Koh Lanta, Krabi, Khao Lak, Koh Lipe and the small islands of Trang), the eastern islands near Cambodia (Koh Chang, Koh Kood, Koh Samet) and a few inland favourites such as Pai, Chiang Mai and the old capital of Ayutthaya.

Every place is listed under its destination, so you can compare beaches and towns side by side before you choose a hotel. Each destination page also has a short guide to its areas.

Planning your trip

Pick your coast by the calendar

The Andaman coast (Krabi, Koh Lanta, Khao Lak, Koh Lipe) is usually at its best from about November to April, with the south-west monsoon bringing rain from roughly May to October. The Gulf islands follow a different pattern: they're often drier in the middle of the year and wettest from about October to December. The eastern islands are wettest from around June to October.

Getting between islands

Domestic flights link Bangkok with Koh Samui, Krabi, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Trat. From there, ferries and speedboats reach the islands, and combined bus-and-boat tickets are widely sold. Allow a full travel day for most island-to-island hops on different coasts.

Before you book

Entry requirements and visa-exemption rules change from time to time. Check the latest UK government travel advice (gov.uk) or your own government's guidance before you travel.

Questions about staying in Thailand

Which Thai island is best for a first trip?

Koh Samui is the easiest, with an airport, plenty of choice and every kind of beach. Koh Lanta is a relaxed favourite with families, and Koh Tao suits divers and backpackers.

Can I combine the Gulf and Andaman islands in one trip?

Yes, but it takes a travel day. Many people fly between Koh Samui and Phuket or Krabi, or take a bus and boat across the south.

Are these hotels independently run?

Most are small, independent places: guesthouses, bungalows, hostels and family resorts. We link to booking partners so you can check prices and availability for your dates.
