Places to stay in Vietnam

Vietnam runs for more than 1,600 km from north to south, and our places to stay follow the classic route through the country: the limestone peaks of Ninh Binh near Hanoi, the beaches of Da Nang and the lantern-lit old town of Hoi An in the centre, and the busy streets of Ho Chi Minh City and the kitesurfing coast of Mui Ne in the south.

Each destination page groups its hotels by area, with a short guide to help you decide where to base yourself.

Planning your trip

Weather by region

The north has a cool winter and hot, humid summer. The centre, around Da Nang and Hoi An, is driest from about February to August and can flood in October and November. The south, including Ho Chi Minh City and Mui Ne, is warm all year, with a rainy season from roughly May to November.

Getting around

Domestic flights link Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City in around an hour. The north-south railway is slower but scenic, and sleeper buses connect most tourist towns.

Before you book

Visa rules for Vietnam change from time to time, and many visitors need an e-visa. Check the latest UK government travel advice (gov.uk) or your own government's guidance before you travel.

Questions about staying in Vietnam

How long do I need in Vietnam?

Two weeks is enough for a north-to-south trip taking in Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Hoi An, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, with a few beach days. Three weeks allows a slower pace.

Is it better to stay in Da Nang or Hoi An?

Da Nang has the bigger beach and more modern hotels; Hoi An has the historic old town and a slower pace. They're about 45 minutes apart, so it's easy to combine them.

How do I get from Ho Chi Minh City to Mui Ne?

By bus, private car or train to Phan Thiet, usually in around three to four hours.
