See today's offersWeligama, on Sri Lanka's south coast, is a sweeping, sandy bay with gentle waves that have made it one of the best places in the country to learn to surf. Surf schools line the beach, and the town has a growing number of cafes, yoga studios and small hotels.
It's also a short drive from Mirissa's whale-watching boats, the old Dutch fort at Galle and a string of smaller beaches. The places we list are beachfront resorts, villas and apartments along or just behind the bay.

At the western end, Taprobane Island, a tiny islet with a villa built by a French count, sits just offshore, and stilt fishermen can sometimes be seen on the coast nearby.
Yes, it's one of the best places in Sri Lanka to learn, with gentle, consistent waves and many surf schools.
