Places to stay in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka packs beaches, ancient cities, tea country and wildlife into an island smaller than Ireland. Our places to stay cover two of its classic stops: Weligama, a relaxed surf town on the south coast, and Sigiriya, home of the famous rock fortress in the Cultural Triangle.

Each destination page groups its hotels and gives tips on when to go and what to see nearby.

Planning your trip

Seasons

The south and west coasts, including Weligama, are driest from about December to April. The Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya can be visited most of the year, with heavier rain from roughly October to December. The east coast has the opposite pattern, with its best weather in the summer months.

Getting around

Trains are scenic and inexpensive, buses go almost everywhere, and many visitors hire a car with a driver for flexibility. The Southern Expressway links Colombo and the airport with the south coast.

Before you book

Most visitors need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) or visa. Rules change from time to time, so check the latest UK government travel advice (gov.uk) or your own government's guidance before you travel.
