Where to stay in Sigiriya

Sigiriya, in the heart of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, is dominated by Lion Rock, a 5th-century rock fortress rising some 200 metres above the jungle, with ancient frescoes, water gardens and a palace on its summit. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the island's most memorable sights.

The village around it is quiet and green, with homestays and small guesthouses among the trees. The places we list are garden stays within reach of the rock, ideal for an early climb before the heat.

Sigiriya village

Best for early climbs and nature

The village lies among paddy fields and forest, with Lion Rock looming above. Pidurangala Rock, a shorter climb a few kilometres north, gives the classic view of Sigiriya itself, especially at sunrise.

Evenings are quiet, with home-cooked rice and curry at the guesthouses and the sounds of the jungle.
