Where to stay in Bohol

Bohol, in the Central Visayas, combines beaches with some of the Philippines' most unusual landscapes: the Chocolate Hills, more than a thousand grassy domes that turn brown in the dry season, and forests home to the tiny, wide-eyed tarsier.

Most visitors stay on Panglao, near the airport, but the places we list are elsewhere on the island: quiet beach resorts in Anda on the east coast, riverside and countryside stays around Loboc, Carmen and Batuan, and a mountain resort with sweeping views.

Bohol, area by area

Bohol is a large island. Tagbilaran and Panglao are in the south-west, the countryside and Chocolate Hills in the centre, and Anda on the far east coast.

Loboc, Batuan and Carmen

Best for tarsiers, rivers and the Chocolate Hills

Inland Bohol is green and rolling. Loboc is known for its river cruises with lunch on floating restaurants, and tarsier sanctuaries near Loboc and Corella let you see the tiny primates in their forest home.

Further east, the Chocolate Hills rise around Carmen and Batuan, best seen from the viewing deck at sunrise or late afternoon. Staying here means you can visit before the day tours arrive from Panglao.

Anda and the east coast

Best for quiet white-sand beaches

Anda, around two and a half hours from Tagbilaran, has long, quiet white-sand beaches, clear water and natural cave pools. It's a peaceful alternative to Panglao, with a handful of resorts and dive shops.

Questions about staying in Bohol

Where should I stay in Bohol?

Panglao for beaches and convenience, the countryside around Loboc and Carmen for the Chocolate Hills and tarsiers, or Anda for quiet beaches.

When are the Chocolate Hills brown?

In the dry season, roughly February to May. They're green for much of the rest of the year.

How do I see tarsiers responsibly?

Visit a recognised sanctuary, keep quiet, don't use flash and never touch them. They're nocturnal and easily stressed.

Can I visit the Chocolate Hills and tarsiers in one day?

Yes. A countryside tour from Panglao or Tagbilaran usually includes the Chocolate Hills, a tarsier sanctuary, the Loboc River cruise and the Bilar forest.

How far is Anda from the airport?

Around two and a half to three hours by road.
